Editions of the Chinese Character Dictionary

Front coversThe complete Chinese Character Dictionary (CCD) comes in two editions:

  • a paperback edition (5.5″ x 8.5″ edition; 678 pages): traditional Chinese characters and simplified Chinese characters. All 7,500 traditional and 1,500 simplified characters can be searched for independently. The latest update was released in April 2024.
  • an e-book (Print Replica) edition. Contents are almost the same as for the paperback edition. The latest update was released in April 2024.

The Simplified Chinese Character Dictionary comes in three editions:

  • a paperback edition (5.5″ x 8.5″ edition; 559 pages): contains 5,730 simplified character entries. If a simplified character has a traditional version, then that is only placed behind the simplified character, but cannot be searched for. The latest update of this edition was released in January 2024.
  • an e-book (Print Replica) edition. Contents are almost the same as for the paperback edition. The latest update of this edition was released in March 2024.
  • a hardcover edition (5.5″ x 8.5″ edition; 549 pages): Contents are almost the same as for the paperback edition. The latest update of this edition was released in December 2021. No new updates are planned for this edition, as more than 550 pages would be needed for a new update, which is above the page limit set by Amazon for this type of book.

All editions can be ordered from Amazon

When ordering a book through Amazon, it is recommended to use the ‘read sample’ feature on the book details page to make sure you have the latest update. The month and year of publication of the update are mentioned on one of the first pages of each edition.

New edition:

Only the new, second edition is available. Most important changes compared with the first edition:

  1. More than 90% of the HSK-6 vocabulary list has been integrated, this includes HSK 1-5 vocabulary words;
  2. All example words and phrases have pinyin added to them.

Notes:

  • The CCD is an ongoing project. Many things concerning the placement of series and characters, meanings and examples can be improved and will be improved over time. Suggestions are welcome.
